8 ½ habla sobre la creación cinematográfica, específicamente sobre el creador, el artista, Fellini; cuya referencia primera como creador es siempre él mismo, su imaginación y su memoria.
En la primera secuencia la idea central del film queda planteada; Guido, el protagonista está encerrado en su coche en medio de un taco que no le permite avanzar, la angustia empieza a apoderarse de él y su auto empieza a llenarse de humo, Guido debe buscar aire en el exterior para salvarse. Una vez fuera, en el techo de su auto, será poseído por lo irreal y empezará a flotar en un vuelo que lo llevará por encima del atasco hasta el cielo. La libertad que supone codearse con la luz del sol y las nubes se esfumará en el despertar y revelará lo anterior como un sueño.
Este principio es todo Fellini, es todo 8 ½, el cine de la metáfora.
La angustia del personaje frente al encierro y el atascadero es la presión que siente el creador, de deslumbrar con su nueva obra, la presión por crear, por satisfacer las expectativas de todos los cercanos que lo rodean, este inicio de tintes surrealistas y ambiente onírico propios de una ensoñación será la norma con que Fellini da la espalda a la realidad, un alejamiento de la razón y la cordura tal como viene dictaminado por lo social y que adquiere su forma definitiva en la representaciones de los sueños y fantasías de su protagonista, que es lo que el director nos mostrará en el transcurso de este viaje.

In the first sequence the central idea of the film is raised; Guido, the protagonist is locked in his car in the middle of a traffic jam that does not allow him to move forward, anguish begins to take control of him and his car begins to fill with smoke, Guido must find air outside to save himself. Once outside, on the roof of his car, he will be possessed by the unreal and will begin to float on a flight that will take him over the jam into the sky. The freedom that implies being close to the light of the sun and the clouds will fade away in the awakening and will reveal what happened as a dream.
This principle is all Fellini, it’s all 8 ½, the cinema of metaphor.
The anguish of the character facing confinement and the traffic jam is the pressure that the creator feels, to dazzle with his new production, the pressure to create, to satisfy the expectations of all those close to him, this beginning of surrealistic aspects and dream environment will be the norm with which Fellini turns his back on reality, away from reason and sanity imposed by society and that acquires its definitive form in the representations of the dreams and fantasies of its protagonist. Which is what the director will show us in the course of this trip.
