“Estas pinturas son bitácoras de viajes que cruzan y traspasan el lugar de origen o el destino. Más bien, se movilizan en una infinita trayectoria de rumbos contradictorios, incómodos e irreparables, como los desenlaces negros e impredecibles de la vida”, sentencia la investigadora Soledad García, acerca del trabajo que desde el 9 de octubre se podrá ver en el Museo de Artes Visuales, MAVI.
En la muestra el artista transmite su visión de mundo a través de estrategias pictóricas y experimentaciones plásticas. Es el caso de su serie Batallas, donde toma el devenir humano y los procesos colonizadores. Además de realizar una suerte de visión radiográfica, en la que asocia mapas cartográficos con descripciones anatómicas del cuerpo humano.
En la exposición, Téllez reflexiona sobre la identidad cultural de diversas partes del mundo y de personajes míticos de diversas culturas, centrándose en el reconocimiento de poetas y escritores que se despliegan en sus pinturas. Asimismo, se observan tiempos y espacios dispares donde cohabitan sacrificios ancestrales, guerreros desnudos con misiles transcontinentales y aviones supersónicos con dibujos de tira cómica o citas de la historia del arte.
“Téllez compone un bestiario de muertes. Algunas trágicas y repentinas, otras voluntarias y arrojadas. Muertes aferradas al deseo imposible de desaparecer, asociadas al afán de mantener la identidad irreconocible en vida. Estas pinturas visten la actitud del otro para ceder y sobrepasar el viaje de uno. Un trayecto que tal vez sólo es posible recomponiendo un cierto lugar origen y sobre todo, el destino”, finaliza García.
El artista.
Eugenio Téllez nació en Santiago en 1939. Estudió en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Chile y desde 1960 trabajó con Stanley William Hayter, uno de los grabadores británicos más importantes del siglo XX y, también, con el artista Marcel Duchamp. Se ha desempeñado como profesor en la Universidad de Illinois y en la Escuela de Pintura y Escultura Skowhegan, ambas de Estados Unidos, además de la Escuela de Bellas Artes en la Universidad de York en Canadá.
El artista tiene la característica de trabajar varias telas al mismo tiempo. Entre sus técnicas usa pigmentos al agua que combina con óleo al manchar la tela y luego poner capas sucesivas de este producto, lo que le permite hacer incisiones en la superficie para que aparezcan los colores subyacentes. Ha incursionado en el video y la acción de arte y en las obras del último período, ha hecho series de pinturas en las que vincula los acontecimientos históricos con obras de gran formato y con títulos como Santa Fe, El entierro de Luciano, Isidore Ducasse.
Ha sido distinguido con el Premio de Grabado de la Bienal de París, Francia; de la Bienal de Latinoamérica de la Casa de Las Américas en Cuba; y el reconocimiento de la Crítica de Chile, entre otros.

“These paintings are a travelogue that goes beyond the place of origin or the destination. These paintings move in an infinite trajectory of contradictory directions, uncomfortable and irreparable as the dark and unpredictable endings in life”, said the researcher, Soledad Garcia, about the exhibition we will be able to see from the 9 of October in Museum of Visual Arts, MAVI.
In this piece of work, the artist transmits his vision of the world through pictorial strategies and plastic experimentations. For example, in his battle series he explains the human evolution and the colonial process. Besides, making kind of a radiographic vision in which he associates cartographic maps with anatomic descriptions of the human body.
In the exhibition, Téllez reflects on the cultural identity of different parts of the world and mythical figures of different cultures, focusing on the recognition of poets and writers you can see on his paintings. Additionally, you can observe different time and spaces where ancestral sacrifices, naked warriors with transcontinental missiles and supersonic planes with comic strip drawings or art history quotes cohabitate.
Téllez forms a death bestiary. Some of these deaths are sudden and tragic and others brave and voluntary. Deaths stubborn to the impossible desire of disappearing associated to the eagerness of maintaining their identity unrecognizable while living. This paintings use the other’s attitude to transfer and overtake the journey of one. A trajectory that is only possible repairing a place of origin and above everything, the destination” said García.
The artist
Eugenio Tellez was born in Santiago in 1939. He studied in the School of Fine Arts of Universidad de Chile university and since 1960 he worked with Stanley William Hayter, one of the most important print makers of Britain in the XX Century, also with other artist called Marcel Duchamp. He has been a teacher in the University of Illinois and in the school of paintings and sculptures Skowhegan, both in the United States besides the School of Fine Arts at the University of York in Canada.
This artist has the characteristic of working with several canvases. Among his technics he uses water-based pigments which he mixes with oil painting when he paints and then he puts lots of layers of it to make underlying colors appear.
He has dabbled in video and action art and in the pieces of work of the last period, he has made a series of paintings where he links historical events with large-format works with titles such as SantaFe/ Holy faith, El entierro de Luciano/ The burial of Luciano, Isidore Ducasse.
He has been honored with the Engraving Award in the Biennial of Paris, France; the Biennial of Latin America in la Casa de Las Américas in Cuba and, the honor of the critics of Chile among others.
