Exposición de MARÍA EDWARDS

“Construcciones imposibles” es la muestra individual que María Edwards presenta en el Museo de Artes Visuales durante julio y agosto de 2019. La artista obtuvo el primer lugar del Premio Arte Joven de Arte Contemporáneo MAVI 2017, por lo que recibió este reconocimiento junto con la oportunidad de exponer en una de las salas del museo.

La exposición busca evidenciar esa “fuerza invisible”, el “vacío” y el tiempo, estableciendo cruces y encuentros a través de las cosas y la relación de ellas en el espacio, inspirada en la música, la física y la astronomía.

Sobre su trabajo, la artista señala: “El proyecto nace a partir de los elementos esenciales que se manifiestan en mi obra y proceso creativo: fuerza, impulso, equilibrio, peso y gravedad en busca del movimiento perpetuo prolongado en el espacio, la finalidad sin fin en cuanto a función y término, el descubrimiento de esa fuerza sutil y primordial que permite dar una nueva vida y poner en movimiento aquellos objetos olvidados que han sido recolectados, por el fuerte magnetismo que el tiempo y el desuso les imprimen y por la potencia y belleza oculta que existe detrás de cada objeto encontrado. Valerme de ellos para la creación de mi propio universo, construido de fragmentos, mecanismos y objetos “imposibles”, para ser recorrido y observado por otros, reimpulsando y prolongando la contemplación y el movimiento”.

MARÍA EDWARDS (Santiago, 1982) es Licenciada en Arte, con mención en grabado, de la Universidad Finis Terrae y diplomada en Cine, Dirección de Arte y Fotografía en la Universidad de Chile. Entre 2009-2012 reside en Nueva York profundizando sus estudios en The School of Visual Arts y Lower East Side Printshop.

• Algunas de sus exposiciones individuales son “Encuentros” en Ars electronica Museum Austria, “25 Esferas / 7 Líneas” en Galería Xavier Fiol, España y “Uni- versos” en Galería Arróniz Arte Contemporáneo, México.
• Ha sido parte de exposiciones colectivas y soloprojects en la XX Bienal Paiz Guatemala, SP-arte Brasil, Arco Madrid, Yia Artfair Francia, ArtBo Colombia, Across the devide Inglaterra, entre otras.
• Ha recibido premios como el primer lugar otorgado por la red Europea de Arte y Ciencia Digital en conjunto con la ESO (European South observatory) y Ars electronica, ArtNexus EFG y Arte para la Ciencia, otorgado por la Comisión Nacional de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica de Chile.

“Impossible Constructions” by María Edwards

Impossible Constructions is the individual exhibit that María Edwards brings to the Visual Arts Museum in July and August, 2019. The artist won first place in MAVI’s Young Contemporary Art Award of 2017, which recognized the value of her work by providing the opportunity to exhibit in one of the museum’s halls.

The exhibition reveals how “invisible forces,” “emptiness” and time intersect and meet through objects and their relation to space, inspired by music, physics and astronomy.

The artist describes her work in the following words: “The project arises from the essential elements that are expressed in my work and creative process: forces, impulse, equilibrium, weight, and gravity. It seeks perpetual movement in space, as a never-ending objective in terms of function and period of time, that discover the subtle and primordial force from which stems the source of new life. It also sets into motion forgotten objects that have been gathered by the magnetic force imprinted upon them by time and disuse, as well as the potentiality and hidden beauty that lie within each recovered object. I make use of these objects to create my own universe, that I construct from “impossible” fragments, mechanisms, and objects for others to encounter and observe, to re-impulse and extend their observation capacity and motion.”

The artist strives to expose the infinite relationships between things, as well as the hidden beauty of each. The exhibit features chalkboards, conceived as “mental maps” that underscore the search, study and encounter of ideas, things and thought. Mechanisms, Constructions & Light Objects, some suspended and in motion, is created from objects collected from different routes. Motion results from force, impulse, weight, and gravity, manifested in things and space, through experimentation and exercises that are tested on chalkboards and with moveable objects.

MARÍA EDWARDS (Santiago, 1982). earned a Fine Arts degree, with a specialization in printmaking from Finis Terrae University and subsequently participated in a certificate course on Film, Art Direction, and Photography at the University of Chile. From 2009-2012 she lived in New York City, furthering her academic study at The School of Visual Arts and the Lower East Side Printshop.

Her individual exhibits include “Encuentros” at the Ars electronica Museum Austria, “25 Esferas / 7 Líneas” held at the Xavier Fiol Gallery in Spain, and “Uni-versos” at the Arróniz Contemporary Art Gallery of México. Her work has participated in group exhibitions and solo projects at the XX Biennal of Guatemala, SP-arte Brazil, Arco Madrid, Yia Artfair France, ArtBo Colombia, Across the Divide in England, and others. Her work won acclaim with the first place prize of the European Art and Digital Science in conjunction with the European South Observatory (ESO) and Ars electronics, ArtNexus EFG and Art for Science, awarded by the National Science and Technology Research Commission of Chile.
