LA FALSA MODESTIA es una exposición compuesta de cuadros, una pintura mural y videos realizados entre los años 2014 y 2016, que recibió el apoyo del Fondo Nacional para el Desarrollo de las Artes FONDART, del Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes de Chile.
Es la décima exposición individual de Ignacio Gumucio, que el arista describe como el décimo ejemplo de “no progreso productivo” con el que caracteriza su experiencia en el taller.
“Repetidamente he tenido la convicción de entender cómo pinto y luego veo como esta certeza es borrada por otro modo contrario de pintar, a la hora de comenzar un cuadro los años de experiencia no parecen ofrecer ninguna base desde donde sustentar la apuesta, se suceden los años y no hay progreso. Expongo por décima vez como si fuera la primera o la última, en cada oportunidad aprendo mucho y olvido lo mismo”.
Gumucio se propone mostrar los modos dispares de contar pintando; intenta a su manera los géneros más recurrentes de la pintura: el paisaje, las escenas, la alegoría y el retrato.
LA FALSA MODESTIA incluye también una película ficción de 25 min. escrita y realizada por Gumucio, en la que se relatan cinco historias ejemplares a propósito de la relación maestro-discípulo en la enseñanza del arte.
Se exhiben además videos realizados en colaboración con los artistas Luis Cosiña, Álvaro Díaz, Gonzalo Aguirre, Pier Stockholm y Carolina Saquel.

“A los artistas hay que creerles poco cuando hablan de la relación que mantienen con su obra. Suelen mostrarse exageradamente arrogantes o ridículamente humildes.
Yo también me he balanceado entre estos dos polos, evadiendo así entregar respuestas directas a los que me interpelan y me preguntan por qué pinto.
Esforzándome por ser sincero; digo que pinto para mostrar. Que lo hago desde el año 1996. Que las diez exposiciones que he presentado desde entonces son todas como fue la primera y como imagino será la última. Que cada vez no puedo evitar mostrar todo lo que sé hacer y lanzar los dardos en todas las direcciones al mismo tiempo como si fuera un candidato ansioso en una audición de talentos.
La falsa modestia que nubla y desvirtúa mi pensamiento, a la hora de definir como son mis pinturas, es la que me permite seguir enganchado al taller y las exposiciones. Los años de experiencia no parecieran ofrecer ninguna base desde donde sustentar una apuesta nueva.
Pinto sin progresar, sin consolidar, haciendo diez veces mis primeras armas.”

LA FALSA MODESTIA/ The False Modesty is an exhibition that contains paintings, wall paintings and videos made in between 2014 and 2016 which received the support from the National Fund for the Development of Culture and Arts (FONDART) and the National Council of Culture and Arts (CNCA) in Chile.
It’s the tenth individual exhibition of Ignacio Gumucio which the artist describes as the tenth example of ”no productive progress” as he characterizes his experience in the studio.
“Many times I have had the conviction of the way I like to paint but then this conviction is gone when I find another completely different way of painting. At the moment when I start a painting, the experience doesn´t give me a base to support a new project, years go by and there is no progress. This will be my 10th exhibition and It’s going to be as if it was the first one or the last one, in each opportunity I learn very much and forget the same I forgot before.”
Gumucio proposes to show the different ways of counting painting; Tries in his own way the most recurrent genres of painting: the landscape, the scenes, the allegory and the portrait.
LA FALSA MODESTIA/ The False Modesty includes a 25 minute fiction film written and made by Gumucio, where five exemplary stories related to the relationship between a master and a disciple of art teaching is narrated.
There are also videos made in collaboration with some artists like Luis Cosiña, Álvaro Diaz, Gonzalo Aguirre, Pier Stockholm and Carolina Saguel.
“We shouldn’t believe everything the artists say about their relation with their piece of work. They usually show themselves extremely arrogant or ridiculously humble. I have been between both poles trying not to give direct answers to the people who request information or ask me the reason I like to paint.
Trying to be honest I say I paint to show my work of art, I do it since 1996. Also all the exhibitions I have presented have been like the first one and as I imagine will be the last one. I can’t help showing everything I know.
False modesty is what affects and twists my thinking when I try to define my pieces of art, which is what makes me want to come back to the studio and the exhibitions. Years of experience doesn´t give you a base to support a new project. I paint without progress, without consolidation, making ten times my first weapons”.
